Recientemente he actualizado de la versión 18 LTS a la 20 mediante la actualización de software, y desde entonces estoy notando congelaciones o bloqueos aleatorios del sistema.
Síntomas La caída suele comenzar con algún Windows congelado por completo (sin respuestas) (frente a código o firefox), y en un corto período (30s-60s) todo el sistema se congela y la única forma de proceder es un reinicio mediante el botón de encendido. Últimamente, también he notado algunos cuelgues instantáneos, con toda la pantalla en negro. Tambien he notado que los cuelgues ocurren generalmente cuando se usa firefox o codigo vs (pero no cuando se ejecutan intencionalmente calculos duros).

Actualización #4 - ¿Solución? Como sugiere @heynnema , he actualizado la BIOS. (por desgracia, Acer sólo produce actualizaciones para Windows, así que fue divertido). También he añadido intel_idle.max_cstate=1
en /etc/default/grub
y los choques han cesado por ahora.
La pista para cambiar grub
estaba en código de error bug soft lockup CPU#2 stuck for 23 s
que sólo se mostraba una vez al estrellarse. (Por lo general, la pantalla se quedó en negro sin mostrar el registro).
